SEO is, undoubtedly, a complex and complicated thing. No one can truly control it, and there are certain common misconceptions that can lead to misunderstandings about what it is and how it works. So, there are a number of reasons why you may be feeling frustrated and frenzied about your SEO results, or rather lack of results. While we can’t possibly cover every infuriating aspect of this SEO life, let’s look at some of the more common ones.
SEO Frustration #1 – It’s NOT Working
You’ve done it all right. You’ve completed everything on the checklist. You’ve got clean killer content, super targeted keywords, mobile-friendly website, even meta-descriptions and ALT tags and all that happy SEO “stuff”. And it’s not done a thing. You’re ready to chuck it all in and call it a day, because you obviously are wasting your time. Here’s where the one big misconception about SEO lies – NONE of that will improve your rankings. NONE of it. What this “stuff” does is make sure your site is as optimized as possible so you can perform at your highest capabilities. If you have a new or small site, all this “stuff” does for you is ensure that your site will be able to handle the traffic that will come its way. It doesn’t do much to send traffic its way, unfortunately. So, by understanding that there is still MORE to SEO success than the technical “stuff” can eliminate a great deal of your SEO frustration.
SEO Frustration #2 – My Rankings Are Always Going Up and Down
One day your on page 1, the nest page 2, then the next somewhere on page one again. This follow the bouncing website routine goes on all the time. You can’t ever seem to hold a steady ranking for more than a day or two. This common frustration is caused by another common misconception – rankings aren’t set in stone, no matter what you do. Here’s why: research has shown that your rankings in the SERPs can fluctuate as much as 6 points in one week. That’s a lot of spots to rise and fall, if you think about it. What causes this bouncing ball effect? Any and all of the following:
- Stuff you do
- Stuff Google does
- Stuff your competitors do
- Stuff search users do
Consider this – you add a blog post and Google gets around to indexing it. It gives you a boost of a spot or two. But the next day, Google gets around to indexing the new blog posts of 3 of your competitors. You drop 4 spots. Then, searchers in your area really hit on your keywords, thanks to some news coverage of a legal scandal, so you get a lot of hits in the results. You go back up. But then, they switch to something else that they read in the newspaper articles, and your competition has those keywords covered better than you. So, back down you go. This is one of those times when you can honestly say that you have no idea what’s controlling your rankings, and you’d be right. You also can’t control this, as there are simply too many factors involved. It’s just the nature of the beast. Accept it and move on. It’s an SEO frustration you can’t cure by fretting over it or doing anything at all about it.
SEO Frustration #3 – My Competition is Cheating!
You’ve found suspect links. You’re pretty sure that their SEO is as black hat as can be. Those no good bums are manipulating the rankings. They may be, and then again, they may not. Have they disavowed those crappy links? Have they really done anything wrong, or are they just growing? You aren’t behind the scenes – maybe they’ve hired Best Legal Practices to manage their site. Maybe they’ve been plugging away for months now, working and gaining ground. What’s their social media like? Their offline efforts at marketing that could affecting their online traffic? Don’t worry about the competition, cheating or not. If you see things you can copy, try them. If you find an idea that has worked for others, go for it. But don’t allow your competitors’ successes frustrate your own efforts. If you pay them any attention at all, use them as inspiration to keep going, keep working, keep at it. Your own success is a sure thing as long as you don’t give up.
