Let’s take a moment, and even though I know it’s February, I want you to look back over last year. How many successes did you have with your online marketing efforts? Hopefully, quite a lot, especially if you’ve been following our advice here at Best Legal Practices. But, I’m sure each and every one of you has a failure or two lurking about in there. Maybe even more online marketing mistakes than online marketing successes? It’s alright. We all make mistakes, we all have things that go horribly wrong, and we all have those days when even the best of our intentions goes awesomely awry. There are things that you can do to avoid many online marketing mistakes, and there are things you can do to fix them. And then there’s learning from them. And that’s what this article is all about – online marketing mistakes and the lesson we can gain.
Online Marketing Mistakes Lesson #1 – It happens to everybody
Even the best experienced pros occasionally get it wrong. They choose a bad course of action, or an untested product, or a bad time. Or they just plain old get careless and do something stupid. It happens. As my non-cussing grandmother would’ve said, manure manifests. Don’t let your mistakes get you down, or make you give up on your online marketing endeavors. Online marketing mistakes are a part of the deal.
Online Marketing Mistakes Lesson #2 – Mistakes mean growth
There’s a saying that goes something like this: Comfort zones are lovely, but nothing much grows there. The same goes for online marketing. You have to take a chance, step out of your comfort zone, get in a little over your head, if you expect growth to happen with your firm. That’s what marketing of any kind is all about – taking risks to gain growth. As Picasso would say, do it to learn how. Attempt to grow so that you will know how to grow. And guess what? You’ll end up growing.
Online Marketing Mistakes Lesson #3 – Plan for failure
The easiest way to recover from a mistake is to have a plan in place. Not just a back up plan for what happens if Plan A flops, but a plan for dealing with the failure of Plan A. Having a Plan B is also, and always, a good idea, but having a plan for handling the crisis – large or small – created by the failure of Plan A is also a very good thing. Don’t let a mistake or failure paralyze you in your tracks. Keep going with your emergency action plan and then get back in the game with a revised Plan A, Plan B or Plan Q, as the case may be.
Online Marketing Mistakes Lesson #4 – Let go and learn
I know. You’re an attorney. A highly educated, intelligent individual who doesn’t like to be seen making mistakes. Well, there are two things you can do. You can hide and pretend that you didn’t really make a mistake and stubbornly persist with your plans. OR You can admit that something’s gone wrong, that you didn’t know what you were doing, and reach out and ask for help. Check out our archived blog articles. Read our online marketing book. Contact one of our people. Don’t let your pride turn a simple mistake into a major problem simply because you were too embarrassed to admit you don’ know it all. Online marketing mistakes can be time consuming. They can be costly. But doing nothing about them, learning nothing from them, is costlier still.
