According to the recently revealed results of a Career Builder.com survey, attorneys may have some unhealthy habits. In the survey, Career Builder asked professionals to report on whether they have experienced weight gain in their current positions. A full 44 percent reported that they had gained weight, but the survey also revealed that certain professionals were more likely than others to be packing on the pounds. Among those professionals on the top of the list for reported weight gain: Attorneys and Judges.
Law Practice Management and Health
Career Builder indicated that there were several possible reasons for the increased weight gain in certain professions. For instance, one theory is that those who showed weight gain were from the professions that are more stationary and involve mainly sitting behind a desk or conference table. Another theory is that stress is spurring unhealthy eating habits. Attorneys are often in high-stress positions and may have to work many hours and late nights. This can lead to stress eating and can also make it difficult to maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine.
Of course, having healthy attorneys and staff at your firm can help to boost employee morale, cut sick days and improve motivation and productivity. As such, it may be part of good law practice management to encourage good health among your attorneys and staff. This may mean making healthy snacks available in the break rooms, offering a company discount on gym memberships or otherwise reminding employees of the importance of staying in good shape despite the stress of their careers or current cases.
